Hospital

The construction of a hospital was one of the first ambitions of the Lapa Brotherhood, although it was only possible to materialize it in 1902, thanks to the financing of the worthy Luzia Joaquina Bruce, born in Maranhão, Brazil, who had received a big monetary quantity for the death of her partner João António de Lima, a “Brazilian of returned trips”, a large inheritance that he decided to use, among many works, in the construction of the Lapa Hospital (1902-1904). Even today, and in his memory, we can see the statue of João António de Lima at the top of the main facade of the building.
In 1948, a second phase of construction and expansion of the hospital took place, which was financed by the benefactress Countess of São Tiago de Lobão. The Lapa Hospital has always focused on keeping up with scientific progresses, receiving modernization works until today.
